Every year, billions of single-use cups are used and discarded. Disposable coffee cups are made from paper and lined with plastic, which makes them waterproof. This plastic lining cannot be removed by most recycling facilities. Once used, the paper part of the cup is usually contaminated by the cup’s contents. There is no UK or European market for contaminated paper food packaging. Plastic cups can take up to 30 years to decompose, causing long-term harm to the environment.

Single use waste numbers are striking!

in the UK 2.5 billion coffee cups are used and thrown away each year

In Germany the consumption of 2.8 billion hot drinks from disposable cups generates around 28,000 tons of waste per year

In Türkiye only 12% of waste is recycled, while the remaining 88% is either landfilled, incinerated, or ends up polluting our oceans.

The Impact on Our Oceans:

Single-use plastic products are more likely to end up in our seas than reusable options. According to the EU Directive on Single Use Plastics, the 10 most commonly found single-use plastic items on European beaches, alongside fishing gear, represent 70% of all marine litter in the EU. These, which are addressed by the EU’s Directive on Single Use plastics is cotton bud sticks, cutlery, plates, straws and stirrers, balloons and sticks for balloons, food containers, cups for beverages, beverage containers, cigarette butts, plastic bags, packets and wrappers and wet wipes and sanitary items.

According to WWF Turkey’s Mediterranean Plastic Report, Turkey is the largest contributor of plastic waste into the Mediterranean Sea, with approximately 144 tons (or six truckloads) of plastic being dumped daily. This not only affects marine life but also disrupts entire ecosystems.

How Net Zero Cup Addresses These Issues:

Net Zero Cup is designed to be a long-term solution to the waste crisis. Made from renewable, plant-based materials, and reusability over many years, it offers a sustainable alternative to traditional single-use cups.

By choosing a plant based and reusable Net Zero Cup, consumers can significantly reduce the waste they generate and help protect the environment.

Waste is one of the most pressing environmental issues we face today. Switching to products like Net Zero Cup can have a profound impact on reducing the amount of waste we generate and preserving the natural world for future generations.

In a world where many products are shipped across continents before reaching the consumer, local production offers a sustainable alternative. Net Zero Cup is proudly produced in Istanbul, supporting local employment and reducing carbon emissions associated with transportation. Here’s why producing locally matters and how it benefits both the environment and the economy.

Local Production Reduces Carbon Footprint:

Producing Net Zero Cup in Istanbul means the cups don’t have to travel far to reach both their Turkish, European and UK markets. This significantly cuts down on emissions from transportation, which is a major contributor to global carbon emissions. By keeping production close to home, the EU and the UK, Net Zero Cup minimizes its overall environmental impact.

Supporting the Local Economy:

Net Zero Cup’s local production provides jobs and supports small businesses in Türkiye, contributing to the country’s economy. This is especially important in a market where sustainable jobs can drive change and set new standards in manufacturing. By choosing products made locally, consumers can support their economy and contribute to a more sustainable world. Net Zero Cup exemplifies how local production and sustainability can go hand in hand, offering an eco-friendly alternative that supports the community.

Creating Synergies across Türkiye, Germany, the EU, the UK, together with Local Environmental Initiatives:

Net Zero Cup has its roots in the UK, when the founder Lale Gunay Pinarel first became aware of her own plastic waste by using single use cups during her morning coffees whilst going to work in London. During a work project, she also realized that waste was being landfilled, after which she commenced her own small steps to reduce single use waste by using reusable petroleum-based cups and stainless-steel thermos in her morning coffees. However, she became aware that both materials have significant carbon footprints.

She wanted to make her own contribution to a greener, more sustainable world and with this goal, she created Net Zero Cup, a reusable cup with a sustainable and carbon neutral material. The biobased material is produced in Germany, reflecting the latest developments around sustainable biobased materials whilst also being in compliance with the highest standards in relation to materials and products in contact with food.

Furthermore, by producing the products in Istanbul, where production is of high standards and in proximity to the UK and the EU, Net Zero Cup has captured the best of not just two but three worlds!

Together with collaborations with organisations such as Skoot Eco, the Aegean Forest Foundation and the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Forestry to plant trees and offset emissions, Net Zero Cup is offsetting its’ carbon footprint produced during manufacturing not just locally but globally as well as enhancing Turkey’s natural landscapes, creating a direct, positive impact on the environment.

Net Zero Cup is not just a regular cup—it is a product born from a commitment to innovation and sustainability. The journey of Net Zero Cup starts with sugarcane, a renewable crop that serves as the foundation for its plant-based bioplastic. This blog post explores the step-by-step process of turning sugarcane into a sustainable cup that’s ready for your coffee or tea.

Step 1: Harvesting the Sugarcane:

Sugarcane is grown in tropical regions and is a highly efficient crop when it comes to carbon absorption. As it grows, sugarcane captures CO2 from the atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for a sustainable raw material.

Step 2: Extraction and Fermentation:

The sugarcane is crushed to extract its juice, which is primarily used for sugar production. The remaining by-products not used for food production, including the bagasse (the fibrous residue), are repurposed to produce bioplastics. Through a fermentation process, these by-products are converted into ethanol, a key ingredient in bioplastic manufacturing.

Step 3: Converting Ethanol to Bioplastic:

The ethanol is then polymerized into bioplastic, creating a material that is durable and flexible, and most importantly, biodegradable under industrial conditions. This bioplastic serves as the primary material for Net Zero Cup, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. As Net Zero Cup is using a plant-based material, the material compound naturally captures 2.5 times carbon dioxide weight per material weight, taken up by the plants from the atmosphere. This means that each cup naturally holds c.350 grams of carbon dioxide as sugar within itself! A natural carbon sink! The cradle to gate global warming potential of the material is also carbon negative due to its high carbon capture content and the material being produced with green energy in Germany!

Step 4: Molding the Cup:

The bioplastic is molded into the final cup shape at a production facility in Istanbul. This local production not only supports the economy but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation, as the cups are made closer to their final market.

From sugarcane fields to your hands, the journey of Net Zero Cup is a testament to the power of innovation and sustainability. By using plant-based materials, Net Zero Cup is paving the way for a new era of environmentally friendly products.

The term “Net Zero” is becoming increasingly common in discussions about climate change and sustainability, but what does it actually mean? Net Zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gases produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. Achieving Net Zero means that we are no longer contributing to the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, a critical goal in the fight against climate change.

Breaking Down the Concept of Net Zero:

Net Zero involves reducing emissions as much as possible and balancing the remaining emissions by removing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere through carbon offsetting. For example, companies can achieve this by investing in renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and supporting projects like reforestation.

How Net Zero Cup Contributes to CO2 Neutrality:

Net Zero Cup is designed with sustainability at its core. From using plant-based materials to offsetting emissions through tree planting initiatives, each aspect of the cup’s production is carefully managed to minimize its environmental impact. For every cup produced, Net Zero Cup plants a tree in collaboration with Ege Orman Vakfı, compensating for the CO2 emitted during the production process.

Global Context: The EU’s 2050 Climate Neutrality Goal:

The European Union has set an ambitious target to become climate neutral by 2050, which means achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions. This goal underscores the importance of innovative products like Net Zero Cup, which help individuals and businesses reduce their carbon footprint on a daily basis.

Understanding Net Zero is crucial in our journey toward a more sustainable future. By choosing CO2-neutral products like Net Zero Cup, we can all play a part in combating climate change and supporting a healthier planet.

As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, everyday products like single-use cups are being reimagined. Traditional paper and plastic cups contribute significantly to waste and environmental pollution, but there is a better way forward: plant-based materials. Net Zero Cup is leading the charge with innovative, plant-based alternatives that challenge the status quo.

Why Traditional Cups Are a Problem:

The typical paper cup might seem harmless, but it often has a plastic lining that makes it difficult to recycle. This results in millions of cups ending up in landfills, where they can take decades to decompose. The production process also involves significant carbon emissions, deforestation, and the use of non-renewable resources.

What Makes Net Zero Cup Different?

Net Zero Cup is made from a biopolymer derived from sugarcane, a renewable resource that captures CO2 as it grows. The cup’s material is 99% plant-based, meaning it significantly reduces the reliance on fossil fuels. This innovative approach not only addresses the waste issue but also tackles the problem at its source: production.

The Environmental Benefits of Plant-Based Materials:

Plant-based cups like Net Zero Cup have a much lower carbon footprint compared to traditional cups. During the life cycle of a traditional plastic cup, from production to disposal, significant amounts of CO2 are released into the atmosphere. In contrast, the bioplastic used in Net Zero Cup absorbs carbon during its growth phase, helping to offset emissions.

Switching to plant-based cups isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s about rethinking our approach to everyday products. With options like Net Zero Cup, we have the power to make choices that are better for our planet and future generations.
